For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11 ESV)
A boy asked his father to buy him a gun for his birthday. The father says, “Sure we go to the toy store tomorrow.” The boy says “No I want a gun like you, I want a real gun with bullets and a holster.” Well, of course the father is not going to honor his son’s request. Now, although we understand why the father will not buy his son a gun, the boy doesn’t. He will be disappointed when all he gets is a toy gun on his birthday.
This is us with God sometimes. We tell Jesus what we want and sometimes we are disappointed at the denial. God is our parent - He knows us better and knows what is best for us. The next time you are disappointed, the next time you feel like complaining, stop and think about the five year old boy who wanted a real gun for his birthday. Are you doing the same? Are you asking for something that could potentially bring you harm instead of happiness? God loves you. He will not keep any good thing from you. Remember that the next time you don’t get the relationship you want or the job you think would have been perfect.
